OUR DIRECTOR
Rick Brunson originally hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned his Master of Arts at Michigan State University, and went on to become a professor at Kendall College of Art and Design. When he retired from Kendall he moved to San Miguel de Allende and started Stirling Dickinson Escuela de Arte.
He immediately took an interest in teaching arts to teens and founded the Stirling Dickinson Escuela de Arte. Instituto Allende donates a beautiful art room to the art school because of its overwhelmingly positive impact on developing local young artists.
OUR NAMESAKE
StIrling Dickinson, an American expatriate, arrived in San Miguel de Allende in 1937. An influential figure in the town's artistic and cultural development, he co-founded two of its most notable art institutions: the Bellas Artes and the Instituto Allende. These schools have played a crucial role in attracting artists and students from around the world, thereby transforming San Miguel into a renowned art international hub.
Dickinson's contributions extended beyond the art community. Known for his humanitarian efforts, he was dedicated to improving the lives of the local people. Every year, he visited over three hundred rural villages to measure the feet of shoeless children, personally ensuring they received properly fitting new shoes.
His life in San Miguel was marked by his commitment to art, education, and community service until his passing in 1998. We are very proud to carry on his name.
